Creating and Claiming Values

The original formulation of creating value ("integrative bargaining") and Claiming value (distributive bargaining") can be found in Walton McKersie, A Behavioral Theory of Labor Negotiation (1965). Although Walton and McKersie did not treat these processes as separable in general-eg. advising "first create value, then claim it" -many subsequent and negotiation advisor have made this mistake.

In-depth analyses of creating and claiming value-and managing the inherent tension between these process-with many practical examples and cases studies can be found in a number of books, especially

Riffa, The Art and Science of Negotiation (1982)

Lax and Sebenius, The Manager as Negotiator (1986)

Mnookin, Peppet, and Tulumello, Beyong Winning (2000)

Malhotra and Bazerman, Netiation Genius (2007)
